Hold Up!

The Raconteurs I’ve seen too many shows. As a result of this, lately I think I’ve become a bit of a dick. Just a bit, though. And not one of those “fuck you for not liking this” dicks, more like a “this better blow me away” dick. I hate myself for it. Also, I’m not getting the results I want from taping the shows, and I have to encourage others around me to be quiet. How very Rock ‘n Roll of me. So, I find myself just standing there… silent, watching my mic and somewhat enjoying myself. For the most part, I don’t mind, as I love having the shows I attended, especially now, having a medium to share with others. However, for the Raconteurs show, I decided to rekindle the fanboy in me. I decided not to bring my rig. I went early. I got as close to Jack White as I could and I went fucking nuts. No worrying about my placement in relations to a speaker, and no raised expectations.

Teri and I rented a car in Ottawa, arrived in Montreal earlier in the day and headed for the Metropolis. She, being a girl who loves to shop, decided to hit up the other end of St. Catherine Street, while I went back to stand in the growing lineup for the show. About 20 minutes of waiting around when the brocktastic one himself shows up, just in time too, as we start moving shortly after. Luckily most of the line was heading upstairs for the great balcony at the metropolis. Not me. Not tonight. I need to be moshed around and spit on.

Just before the Sadies took the stage, Teri found us near the front and got us some drinks (she’s good - however, the drinks would turn out to be a poor choice, as I’m pretty sure some damage was done to my bladder by the end of the show), and we really enjoyed their set. These guys are just made for the stage, as they kicked our asses with a great blend of rockabilly/surf/folk. I highly recommend checking them out.

I was pretty pumped at this point, but in extreme bladder pain. I knew it would all go to the back mind soon. So it did. The boys took the stage, and for a second I thought I was at a Darkness show (cut your hair, Brendan). Of the previous handful of times I’ve seen the Raconteurs, the set was pretty much the same, with a few surprises here and there. The setlist tonight was heavily focused on the new album, with just a couple old ones mixed in (and reworked). “Intimate Secretary” didn’t work so well, but “Steady, As She Goes” sure did. Jack seemed a little off tonight (maybe sick), but it didn’t take away from his performance. There is still nothing quite like hearing him solo on “Blue Veins”.

We knew we needed a couple videos for you fellas (mainly “Carolina Drama”), so we came through with that, have no fear. My only regret of the night came when I accidentally hit a button during “Rich Kid Blues” and also I really should have kept filming for “Hold Up”. My bad. Anyway, enjoy the few we did get.
