Takka Takka @ Piano’s in New York

takkatakka.jpgTakka Takka played a Tuesday residency show @ Piano’s in New York last night. This Brooklyn-based indie rock quintet got their break after touring with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in Fall 2006.

Their lyrics and melody are melancholy (listen to the eerie Silence), yet the hooky guitar and drums help strike the balance between sad and edgy. Their performance was relatively calm and low-key, and their recorded tracks sound tighter than they did live yesterday.

The Takers has psychedelic undertones – and it’s lush indie rock at its finest. Everybody Say starts with a catchy guitar riff that serves as the perfect backdrop for Levine’s wistful vocals. The playful keyboards add a touch of faraway dreamy-ness to a fully textured sound that grows on you after each listen.

Gabe Levine’s spacey vocals recall Tom Petty or even Adam Duritz (of the Counting Crows). Takka Takka’s melodic progressions are smart and unpredictable. The guys create a clever blend of rock, pop, and tribal sounds. Their songs are the perfect backdrop to a rainy day indoors or a long drive. Their sound goes down smooth – it’s gentle and soothing like a frothy cappuccino.

Takka Takka’s latest record Migration will be released on July 29th on Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Have a listen to a couple tracks on their myspace.
