Zach Condon swears he’s 23, but you might think he was all of 16 to look at him. It’s just the first of his paradoxes, leading into the larger one: the music of Beirut, a harmonious blend of Eastern Europe, American popular music, folk, accordion, ukulele… With influences ranging from The Smiths through Yves Montand and Balkan folk, the Texan had already cast a spell over the indie scene with a pair of albums when he returned with a double EP: March of the Zapotec takes his band through the influences of Mexico, while Realpeople-Holland works out his electronica side. Opening the evening, The Dodos, two strange birds from San Francisco whose Visiter syncopates the sounds of guitar and xylophone…

You know how I know Osheaga is gay?

Word on the street is that Coldplay will be headlining one of the two days at Osheaga this year and some band called Elbow is also coming. Man, I’m praying for a solid undercard. The lineup will be announced Wednesday tomorrow TODAY.

Xavier Rudd is a one-man-band/multi-instrumentalist who plays guitars, Yidaki (didgeridoos), Weissenborn slide guitars, stomp box, harmonica, and percussion, Rudd made his Canadian debut in 2004 with Solace. In the years since, his popularity and reputation have begun to mushroom for a string of conscious, heartfelt songs and an impressive stage show that finds him performing those songs’ guitar, didgeridoo and various percussion parts simultaneously—using a unique set-up that finds him literally surrounded by his various instruments and singing from behind a stand holding three didgeridoos (of different keys).

The past few years have been a whirlwind for the singer. In between sold-out tours in Europe, Australia and North America, he’s supported the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, and has been working on the film score for fellow-surfer and Rudd-enthusiast Matthew McConaughey’s Surfer Dude, co-starring Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson. In the meantime, he’s earned a reputation as a great Australian activist, advocating for indigenous rights and environmental responsibility.

Apart from the touring and activism, recording proves a challenge. “What I do, musically, is not something that people know much about,” he says. “It’s kind of its own thing. So every time we go in to record, we learn new ways to approach it, to capture the right sound. There’s a lot of spill in the different mics, and a lot of factors to consider. So with each recording, we’ve learned different ways to approach it. On White Moth, I opened the door for the possibilities in the studio, and got a vibe for what I could do. On Dark Shades of Blue (recorded in Australia and released in August 2008), I think we captured what we do live, the thickness of it, the tone. I think we finally achieved what I’ve always wanted to hear on my recordings”

With John Peel as an early champion, Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having built up over the years a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia. Their last album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country (2006), was to prove pivotal for the band, taking them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights. “You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else,” stated All Music Guide in a familiar glowing review.

Nearly three years on from that release and Camera Obscura are ready to release the follow-up, My Maudlin Career; their first for their new label (the legendary indie, 4AD) and fourth overall. After his successful touches on their last record, they returned to Sweden to work again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Concretes). His wonderful understanding with the band continues to flourish, again fully realising not just the potential of Tracyanne Campbell’s songs and remarkable voice, but also the ensemble musicianship of the group as a whole.

Camera Obscura announce the forthcoming album release of, My Maudlin Career, on April 21st, 2009.
The premier single release from My Maudlin Career is French Navy, currently being streamed on the band’s website and myspace.
It is also being gifted as a free download for those who sign up to the band’s new mailing list at www.camera-obscura.net

Kath Bloom lights up the Winter Gloom

Published by AnnA under News

148968bloom.jpgYou know that sweet, heartbreaking song in Before Sunrise?  Well, it’s called “Come Here” and is sung by folk-pop legend Kath Bloom.  Decades after Kath Bloom first enchanted listeners with her haunting voice in the seventies, a two-disc set Loving Takes This Course: A Tribute To The Songs of Kath Bloom is being released that features sixteen artists paying tribute to the celebrated folk singer. Disc one includes sixteen of Bloom’s originals, while disc two is a collection of sixteen modern-day artists such as Devendra Banhart, Josephine Foster, Bill Calahan, The Dodos, and Meg Baird (of Espers).   The artists do a great job of interpreting Bloom’s songs, keeping the original spirit of the song alive, while incorporating their own personal touches.

The album drops on April 7th.  You can find the entire tracklist here.

Bearded Man @ Il Motore

Published by AnnA under News

hermandune.gifHerman Dune and his beard will headline at Il Motore tonight (March 11th).  If you’re in the mood for quirky folk-pop songs that you can click your heels to, check it out.   Herman Dune’s lyrics tell stories that are witty, humorous, and completely unpredictable.   He has a knack for squeezing a millions syllables into one beat, being creative with a horn and handclaps,  and keeping his melodies upbeat, while his themes seep with sadness.   Herman Dune’s latest album, Next Year In Zion was released in October 2008 on Everloving records, home of Akron/Family, and Jack Johnson.  You love it!
