Japandroids Tour Update

Published by brockmasterflex under News

Japandroids Updated Tour Listings. Montreal Show @ Lambi July

It wasn’t swine flu. Good. Turns out singer Brian King had to undergo emergency surgery.

From P4K:

When Vancouver breakouts Japandroids went ahead and canceled nearly three weeks worth of tour dates yesterday due to a medical emergency, it sounded like a pretty serious medical emergency. Turns out singer-guitarist Brian King had to undergo emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer– the same aching malady that claimed the lives of James Joyce and J.R.R. Tolkien, according to our friends at Wikipedia (aka the whole of the world).

Make sure to get your hands on Post-Nothing its probably going to be your favorite record of the summer.

You Won’t See Japandroids This Friday!

Published by brockmasterflex under News

Japandroids Tour Cancelled. Montreal Show Cancelled.

[NOTE: Japandroids have since updated there tour schedule here]

Shit, I was pumped for this. Could this be swine flu related?
From P4K:

So bittersweet. Just one day after we awarded crackling Vancouver rawk duo Japandroids a Best New Music honor, the pair have been forced to cancel much of their current North American tour due to illness.

But all is not lost. Rescheduled dates are promised very soon. And look at it this way, now you can spend even more time with their wind-machine-to-the-face debut LP, Post-Nothing, before screaming along with lines like, “We run the gauntlet, must get to France so we can French kiss some French girls!” Half full!

Japandroids:

04-25 Winnipeg, Manitoba - The Lo Pub
04-27 Sudbury, Ontario - Townehouse Tavern
04-29 Hamilton, Ontario - Casbah Lounge
04-30 Guelph, Ontario - E Bar

I would still assume that the Montreal show is still ago with Immaculate Machine at Club Lambi (according Blue Skies Turn Black’s webpage). My back plan will be The Tragically Hip at The Metropolis.

Get me more Sedatives.

Published by wells under News

A full Sedatives update posted to PunkOttawa today by Sedatives drummer Dave Williams. They have a new LP, a European tour, and a bunch of great shows coming up.

After what seemed like an eternity of recording, mixing, remixing, fighting, making up and hugging it out, the Sedatives LP is done. 11 tracks, engineered by our good pal and Buried Inside guitar whiz Andrew Tweedy with assistance from unofficial fifth Sedative Alex Thurston, mixed by myself (Dave Williams), all at Alex’s Rock Among Us studios (both the original location and the swell new Rock Among Us II studio, built with Alex’s own Jiu-jitsu-ing hands).

The record will be out this summer, and somehow (we’re still reeling from the idea) we managed to get our two favourite labels involved - P.Trash (once again) will be doing the European press and British Columbia’s own Deranged Records will be handling North American duties. Pure insanity. Matt at Doublenaut is currently knee-deep in layout details & guaranteed it’s gonna look incredible.

We’ll be celebrating this historic event with a release party here in our lovely hometown of Ottawa and then shipping off to Germany, Holland & more in September to do things up Euro-style with our pals at P.Trash & Taken By Surprise Records (who will be putting out an EP for us this summer as well) and our tour-bros IDLE HANDS.

We’ve also got some shows coming up in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Sudbury & who knows where else this summer, so come and check out some new songs if you can.

We’ll keep you posted about release dates, artwork, shows & the like as details are confirmed.

Also, it looks like P.Trash will be releasing the LAST COMMUNION record this summer as well…LC will also be coming off an indefinite hiatus to play a handful of shows to mark the occasion. We’ll be playing some tasty new jams to boot.

So come check SEDATIVES out at the Gaga Weekend and/or at Bluesfest and if you’re feeling frisky, fly over to Europe in September for some international fun.

Oh ya, and there are some new tracks up on the ol’ Myspace.

Looks like it’s gonna be a fun, busy-ass summer!

Hope things are terrific.

Dave & Sedatives.

They have quickly become one of the best punk bands around, so check em out.

NxNE Inital Lineup (or why I hate Toronto)

Published by brockmasterflex under News

NxNE: North By Northeast Toronto June 17-21 2009 Lineup

Have you seen the lineup they have secured for NxNE? Its going to rock and rule…. its garage-tastic…. its lo-fi…. ok enough. The lineup is solid and includes many bands I want to see so you can understand my excitement and the frustration that this fest has to be so far away from me.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, NxNE is like SxSW only in a different direction. The music part of the fest is from June 17th til the 21st and will feature 500 bands in venues throughout the city of Toronto. Of those 500, the current confirmed lineup is:

Osheaga 2009 Lineup Update

Published by brockmasterflex under News

Got an email today from Osheaga informing me of a lineup update:

Since the release of their first album Peace Love Death Metal, Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme´s brainchild has become a formidable force in the rock world. Known for their legendary live shows highlighted by Hughes´ over-the-top stage antics, Eagles of Death Metal come as an incredibly rockin´ addition to Osheaga ´09.

Montreal native Caracol returns to Osheaga Saturday, August 1! For those who may not remember, Caracol paid her first visit to the Osheaga stage back in ´06 as part of the duo DobaCaracol. Armed with her solo debut (L’arbre aux parfums) and a new, yet vintage sound, Caracol is picking up where DobaCaracol left off: 100,000 albums sold worldwide and counting. Not bad for a “local”! We´re looking forward to hearing her fusion of folk, rock-steady, and ukulele live at Osheaga!

Good to see some more rock added with EDM. Also if you are a Twitter-er you can follow Osheaga here, and us (Trendwhore) here.

I Don’t Care If Its Old

Published by barton_liberty under MP3s

Nirvana Live @ Les Foufounes Électriques September 21 1991

It’s September 21st 1991, Nevermind will be released in three days, Nirvana is playing Foufounes Electrique to a less than half full house most of whom are there to see the opening act The Melvins. That is according to Rob Campbell, lighting technician at the venue. No one could have known that in a few short weeks Nirvana would be the biggest band in the world. (even though many people would later claim they knew exactly that). This is the last time they would ever play in Montreal. Since we were not at the show nor will we ever have the opportunity to cover a Nirvana show ourselves this is as good as it gets. Rob remembers many people coming up to him the following year (after Teen Spirit broke out) saying how they could not believe they missed it. Here we are 18 years later and the energetic underground band that somehow became so huge is no more. What we have now are journals, action figures, and a new Kurt Cobain pre distressed signature series Converse shoe. Which are giving a whole new meaning to the song “Rape Me”. Complete with pages from his journals as the design on one of the shoes. The extremely private Cobain will now have his journals on the sneakers of teens across the land. Not to mention the whole pre packaged grunge look that the band despised… it’s also not very hard to distress a pair of Converse. It seems a lot of Nirvana fans think this is great, I personally don’t because Cobain was very intent on staying true to his punk rock ideals by not endorsing any products while alive. We have pre-packaged grunge get your $100 pre ripped jeans and your designer plaid shirt from GAP to go with your new Kurt Cobain Cons and you’ll be a proper grunge rocker. But you can’t really blame a kid for wanting to buy or wearing these shoes you can only blame really the one person who has control over the Cobain estate. Anyway, Back to the show!

What we have here for you today is a high energy from a great band in their prime. Not the greatest Nirvana show by any means but pretty solid overall. Some memorable moments from this show are the performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. This was before it was the bands “hit”. In later years the band hated playing the song because it got so huge. Even going as far as omitting it from several set lists altogether to the dismay of many casual fans I’m sure. But, here we have a great version it was not yet the anthem for Gen X’ers everywhere and you could tell the band was really into playing it live. Krist saying at the beginning of the show how they love playing here in Toronto is a funny moment as is when they introduce Negative Creep three times while going on to play songs that are not Negative Creep.

Anyway there you have it the full show in mp3 format. To quote Rob Campbell “who would have thought three guys that were so wasted would ever sell millions of albums a few months later”.

To Me, Punk Rock Means Encouraging Bikes Not Cars

Published by brockmasterflex under Reviews, Videos, MP3s

EDITORS NOTE: You may have noticed some site outages over the past few days. I’m doing some nerd shit and moving the site from one webserver to another, a trivial task…… bear with me.

Saturday night locals Black Feelings and Dead Wives with Brooklyn’s Japanther and Ninjasonik tore La Sala Rossa apart.Well I actually didn’t see Dead Wives set since I opted to watch Montreal humble Toronto, but I’ll assume the best. Black Feelings has one of the most energetic bass players I have been. Their sound is thick, dark and worth a listen. Ninjasonik took to the stage pumping The Hold Steady’s Stay Positive. DJ Teen Wolf and Telli Fenderline then proceeded to slay the Montreal crowd, igniting shirtless bros crowd surfing while dancing girlies flooded the stage. Take any chance you can get to see Ninjasonik, tour dates are at their myspace. Finally Japanther took to the stage taking the sweaty crowd to another level. No dancing girls on stage, they followed the bros and started topless stage diving. Their set was short but ferocious, we need more shows like this in Montreal.

For Ears:

Ninjasonik - Art School Girls (Remix)

Ninjasonik - Daylight (Matt & Kim Remix)

Japanther - Um Like Yer Smile Is Totally Ruling Me Right Now

For Eyes:

Ninjasonik - Art School Girls

Japanther - One Hundered Dollars

Japanther - Challenge
