The hard working folks at The Yellow Bird Project are upping their game, not only are these guys putting out some of the slickest indie tees on the planet but they’ve recently published a book, The Indie Rock Coloring Book:
From the creative womb of the Yellow Bird Project, we are proud to introduce the newest member of our family, the Yellow Bird Coloring Book. The coloring book offers an interactive and colorful journey of creativity, artistic expression, music, and charity. Andy J. Miller, a talented illustrator, collaborated with YBP to produce this unique expression of art and music. Wiggle yourself through the intricate Broken Social Scene maze, marvel in the colourful carnival of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, color Bon Iver’s enchanted water supply, or slide down the psychedelic playground of MGMT. Profits from this colourful venture will go towards our project and the charities we support, ensuring amazingly fresh new artists and their tee-shirts will be available for your purchasing pleasure! With over 25 hand-illustrated designs dedicated to indie and YBP musicians, including Iron & Wine, Bloc Party, The National and Devendra Banhart, this book is a sure fire pleaser. Oh and no rules here, we even encourage you stay outside the lines!
So now the YBP is hitting the road to promote this little treasure with stops in San Francisco, New York and Montreal. Here is the Montreal show info:
There will be children, colouring, cookies, and juice!
…. And, a special acoustic performance from a member of the YBP family.
Now if you’re anything like me you’re dieing to know who will be doing the acoustic performance. I mean, it can’t be just anybody or they wouldn’t mention it right? Right? Well Trendwhore has the scoop. The special acoustic performance will be done by none other than Murray Lightburn of The Dears! How rad is that?
Remember Drawn and Quarterly is a pretty small space so get their early. See you there birdies!
Remember when I would group all the weekend shows together and post them early on Friday so you had one last overall look as to what awesome shows were scheduled? Well, I’m going to do it again, though this weekend isn’t the best overall show-wise (quantity not quality). If you know something I don’t then please feel free to drop a show in a comment box thing and I’ll move it into the schedule below. UFC 102 is also on Saturday and I’m hoping Nogueira kills Couture.

MP3 OF THE WEEK
Every Friday on The Whore I’m going to supplement the weekend concert round up with a MP3 that I’m adoring during the week and this week its No Age’s “You’re A Target”. This track will be on their upcoming Losing Feeling EP which will be officially released October 6th. If you are new to No Age tracking may be more accessible for the ear than say something off Weirdo Rippers but not enough of a change in sound to alienate current fans. Enjoy!
Last year Tapes n Tapes played the Studio Juste Pour Rire for about 50 people. It was a horrible winters night and they had to compete with Habs vs. Bruins playoff hockey, but I was there and have the review to prove it. But I’m reliving this night for you because that was the night that I was first introduced to the greatness of White Denim who were the openers that chilly night. White Denim are a 3 piece hailing from Austin Texas and play a style thats a punk, funk and soul cocktail. Some might say that the genre mix is not a unique blend but its one that WD have honed, made their own and slay unsuspecting listeners with nightly. The dudes are on tour now with their latest album Fits and will be hitting up Il Motore Novemember 10th, so keep the date open and get your tickets here.

So tomorrow night (Thursday August 27th) The Lovely Feathers will be headlining a free show down at Parc des Ameriques at the corner Rachel and St. Laurent [map]. The under card looks solid too so prepare yourself for MAIN MADNESS!
In more Lovely Feathers related news i (heart) music has posted their NxNE set and gives them a solid pat on the ass with the following quote “The Lovely Feathers may just be one of the most exciting bands in Canada today.” I’ll find out tomorrow and so should you!
Trendwhore’s on again off again writer barton_liberty sent me the following many many months back when I wanted him to review the release of “The Devil and Daniel Johnson”
The first time I heard of Daniel Johnston was from a “Hi, How are you” t-shirt that Kurt Cobain wore frequently during interviews and photo shoots in 1992. Being the Nirvana fanatic I was (still am) I wanted to like the same music as Kurt so I kept Daniel Johnston on my long mental list of bands I intend to check out sometime, but I never actually did get around to it. Fast forward to last year in a small record store when I saw that familiar frog design from the shirt on a record so I picked it up right away. I had no idea what to expect really, except hearing one person mention a lot of his recordings were “Lo-Fi” but I’ve always loved Leadbelly and Robert Johnson so the Lo-Fi thing was not a concern for me. What I got was a bit rawer sounding than I expected but amazing at the same time. I was instantly impressed with the song “Running Water” a song that has Johnston singing along to… water running out of a tap with no other instruments involved. The album itself is very simplistic with great lyrics and catchy melodies sung into a tape recorder (you can actually hear the record and stop buttons being pressed).
He never finished the review but I thought it would be a good intro to my post about Johnson’s new album and current tour with The Capitol Years. Johnson’s forthcoming release Is And Always Was is expected to be drastically different that Hi… How Are You? (the album barton_liberty is referencing)which will be produced Jason Falkner (ex-Jellyfish). Don’t expect to hear the stop and start buttons being pressed, do expect a more hi-fi approach on this album. Have a taste:

Youthful up and comers The Smith Westerns will be playing at Friendship Cove Sunday, August 30th with The Sunday Sinners, you can get your online tickets here. The Smith Westerns blew my mind when they opened for Nobunny (they were also his backing band at the time) at Divan Orange back in February. They have a new 7″ coming out on Transparent Records in UK for “Be My Girl” which will only be limited to 300 copies, get yours here. You can download the digital 7″ below. Enjoy!
Solid lineup, take a listen to “You Look Good” by the Golden Isles (at the end of this post) and check out the new video for Diamond Rings “All Yr Songs” by Colin Medley:
This is a music video I made for Toronto musician Diamond Rings (John
O’Regan of The D’Urbervilles). It was shot with no budget in my living
room and in the area around my apartment in the Junction. It is the
first official release by Diamond Rings, appearing on a split 7″
coloured vinyl single with Kingston, ON rock combo PS I Love You via
Hype Lighter. It is my second music video after Timber Timbre’s We’ll
Find Out.
HEALTH have a new album coming out entitled Get Color September 8th and inside said album could be 1 of the 66 prize tickets. P4K has more details:
Whoever finds the first prize ticket will win a weekend in Los Angeles, the band’s hometown. You get a free round-trip plane ticket, and you get to stay with the band. They’ll take you to Six Flags and the zoo, and they’ll bring you breakfast in bed.As first prizes go, this isn’t quite as amazing as a tour of a mysterious, magical chocolate factory staffed by orange-skinned dwarfs, but it’s pretty damn close. There’s also less chance of turning purple after chewing a piece of gum. (The band’s one caveat: “IF YOU HAVE BEEN REMANDED TO EITHER A PENITENTIARY OR A MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY FOR A CUSTODIAL SENTENCE UP TO OR EXCEEDING 30 DAYS, PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH FULL DISCLOSURE. THIS IS FOR OUR SAFETY AND YOURS.”)
65 other albums will also feature color-coded tickets redeemable for prizes like personal gifts, t-shirts, locks of a band member’s hair, fur from a band member’s cat, and posters or records signed by the band in their own blood. Or, there are more experiential prizes:
“WE WILL GET STEADILY INEBRIATED WITH YOU OVER I-CHAT WHILE WORKING ON A PROJECT TOGETHER”
“AN UPLIFTING PHONE CALL FROM HEALTH’S MANAGER”
“A PERSONALITY TEST HAND COMPLETED BY A BAND MEMBER”
“WE CONFERENCE CRANK CALL A PROMINENT INDIE MUSICIAN TOGETHER”
Yes, seriously.
How awesome is that give away?
HEALTH are also touring and will be stopping in Montreal September 20th with Pictureplane and Black Feelings(!) at La Sala Rossa. You can pick up tickets here.
Finally, HEALTH has released a stream of “We Are Water” check it out…
Fuck thats a stupid headline, but its the best I’ve got. Jay Reatardmight not appreciateThe Pains of Being Pure At Heart but I certainly do. Normally most tween pop would make me throw up blood, but these guys got something special in their sound that just makes me shake. Next month you’ll get a chance to see The Pains with Cymbals Eat Guitars. Both bands have put out solid albums this year and I wouldn’t be surprised to find both on some year end lists. The Deprecation Guild are also on the bill, haven’t checked them out yet, I’ll wait until the show.
Just a quick friendly reminder that Modest Mouse will be playing the Metropolis this Wednesday with openers The Dutchess and the Duke. Tickets are around $30 and you can get at local record stores Atom Heart, Cheap Thrills, L’Oblique or online at TicketPro.
Did you see the Modest Mouse video for “King Rat” that was directed by Heath Ledger? Well here it is:
Finally here is a quality video from The Dutchess and the Duke for their song “Mary”.
I know this is a little late and the show was last week but it should be worth pointing out that this show was the show of the summer. I hope you didn’t miss it by going to AC/DC. You might be asking (read kicking) yourself “why?!”. Let me count the ways,
#1 Bloodshot Bill is excellent. I don’t know if its his charm or his yelps but he won me over 2 songs in.
#2Demon’s Claws rock hard. One might say that doing yoga on stage while playing guitar is not rock and roll, to which I would retort, “fuck off gramps its the new millennium get with it!”
#6 The encore was a 3 song set of the new formed Black Lips/King Khan & BBQ Show gospel supergroup The Almighty Defenders. I’ve been in dire straits waiting for this record to drop and it seems like it will be well worth the wait. After the setlist take a listen to Cone of Light, a little taste of the new album.
more excellent photos of this show (and more) can be found on Susan’s Flickr stream HERE

Yesterday Deerhunter Blog posted the Atlas Sound take on Walk A Thin Line by Fleetwood Mac. Atlas Sound, if you don’t know is Brandford Cox’s (of Deerhunter) solo project. The new album Logos will be released October 20th on Kranky. We got a taste of what we’ll find on Logos last month when Cox released Walkabout featuring Panda Bear (which set the blogosphere on fire). You can listen to both Walk A Thin Line and Walkabout below.
REMINDER: Atlas Sound will be playing Montreal October 23rd opening for Broadcast at Le National, get your tickets here.
New song from Nathan Williams, aka Wavves, who’s apparently been joined full-time by Hella’s Zach Hill. Haters will continue to hate, but this is kind of the jam
wavves - cool jumper
i can’t figure out the hate this guy gets all the while churning out consistently good material. are you not entertained!
reminder: wavves is playing with ganglians at Friendship Cove September 23rd.
Yet another awesome free punk show in Ottawa this week. Year Zero will be releasing a tape on Bruised Tongue and will be joined by Sudbury powerpoppers Statues. As usual this is all going down on Thursday, Aug 13th, at the Rock and Roll Pizza Party (at the Atomic Rooster on Bank Street) and there will be free admission, possibly some free pizza, and $5 tallboys for all.
Year Zero are one of the best new punk bands in Ottawa- they have a few awesome tracks posted on their myspace. Check it out and I’ll see you at the RRPP!
But no more. Sufjan is set to tour very intimate venues on the eastern half of North America starting September 21 in Philadelphia and wrapping up with four dates in New York City. His label, Asthmathic Kitty, makes it clear that the tour “has nothing to do with” the “BQE” box– so it seems safe to expect some of those Sufjan songs you still put on repeat every now and then. And, who knows, maybe he’ll break out a couple new ones, too?
