Male Nurse (aka. Davey Q, aka. Davey Bobabie, aka Davey Gravey) may be the busiest guy in Ottawa. He has his fingers in pretty much everything going on nowadays - he plays with locals Mothers Children, Cloven Hoofs, Chandeliers, Million Dollar Marxists, sang backups on the incredible Year Zero release, and has filled in for just about every other cool band in the city. Male Nurse is Davey’s singer/songwriter/folk project and after seeing him live again this past weekend he has cemented himself as one of the premier songwriters in Ottawa.
While I’m no expert in the area, I do know that Davey has successfully picked up where (other Ottawa native) Andrew Vincent left off with “To Thine“. Stripped down, beautifully crafted songs with heartfelt (and often ridiculous) lyrics. Live, Davey is sincere enough to make you believe everything he is singing and charismatic enough to hold your attention to his every move.
Luckily for us, he has been nice enough to post his new EP “Everything’s Amazing” (and old EP “All My Friends Are Assholes”) on his myspace (check the blog section). Go listen to them, then go see him live and buy him a beer to thank him for some of the best songs of the year.
The Action - Ottawa’s first punk band (allegedly) are getting back together for two days of ‘77 punk mayhem. This coincides with their complete recordings being re-issued by Sudden Death/Rave Up Records.
THE LEGENDARY ACTION ARE PLAYING TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 30 YEARS!!!On Nov 28th,2009, The Dominion Tavern in Ottawa,Canada will be the unlikely site of much media attention as The ACTION, “Ottawa’s First Punk Band” play their highly anticipated REUNION SHOW!!! (a 2nd Matinee/ ALL AGES show has been added for SUN,NOV 29th!)The band has just released their “COMPLETE PUNK RECORDINGS ‘77-’78″ Album on SUDDEN DEATH Records in Canada and the US and on RAVE UP Records in Europe(on vinyl).
The album is currently available from SuddenDeath.com,RaveUp.com and at select record stores throughout Canada and the US. Pogo to “T.V.’s on the Blink”, “Down Town Boy”, “Do The Strangle” and “Waiting for the Man,” “Seafood Mama”, “Let You Down”, “Pressed Pig”, and “Zona Rosa”, plus live recordings from the famed Rotters Den! This is a Punk collector’s dream, a chronicle of a time when anything could happen and often did. Besides showcasing THE ACTION’s great catchy punk tunes, the album also shows the band’s chops as a versatile star rock and roll outfit that was ahead of their time! IT ROCKS! Get Ready…Here comes THE ACTION back to take their rightful place as contenders for the Rock Throne!!!
VINYL FORMAT. The White Wires are a three piece from Ottawa. This LP was originally released by Going Gaga Records on 11/08/08 in a quantity of 325 copies. Those of you lucky enough to score a copy before it went out of print were well aware of how urgently this record needed to be available again, and we are flattered to be the people responsible for that. It’s a perfect summer time record yet it is just in time for the holiday season for the second consecutive year. The White Wires have found a harmonious balance somewhere between the lands of goofy and cool, and their songs reflect that brilliantly. This LP features nine songs of maximum sing-a-long-ability without a trace of pretense. A couple of listens and you’ll be planning imaginary BBQ’s with The White Wires as your entertainment and guests of honor. Edition of 1,000.
Fleet Foxes drummer, J Tillman will be stopping at Il Motore Thursday along with his brothers band, Pearly Gate Music. Tillman is touring supporting his latest album Year In The Kingdom (buy), released on Western Vinyl last month. Tickets for the show are $15, which you can get online here. More details at the fb event.

You see all this blather and talk in the news about this H1N1 virus. Who the fuck cares Montreal!? The Jesus Lizard are playing Le National in like 10 days! That is what you should be worried about. Vaccines shmackccines, GO GET JESUS LIZARD TICKETS!
Michael Azerrad said it best:
… singer David Yow sounds like a kidnap victim trying to howl through the duct tape over his mouth; the effect is horrific.
Montreal psych-punks Grand Trine will be supporting.
For you record buffs The Jesus Lizard have re-issued Down, Goat, Head, Liar, and Pure
Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the available digital mastering equipment and analog to digital converters were not as technologically advanced as the equipment available now. The original CD masters of these records were quieter and just did not have the same punch as the vinyl records did at the time. These re-masters, done by Steve Albini and Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering, sound a world apart from the originals.
