Monday night was the last night of Montreal’s two day love affair with Joanna Newsom at The Ukrainian Federation. If you missed Sunday’s show (like I did) you can catch a review over here.
A few notes about the show:
The Ukrainian Federation can get real hot, real fast.
Hearing a harp is person is strange and beautiful.
Joanna’s percussionist is subtly awesome.
A sweaty Joanna Newsom will haunt my dreams forever.

Were you at the Ukrainian Federation last night? I was, though a day too early (reading fail) so I didn’t see the show. From the people I spoke too that did go, there seemed to be few good words for the opener Kevin Barker, but for Joanna, oh lovely Joanna, reviews of her set where nothing short of stellar. Above you’ll notice a fantastic poster for the show(s) by Montreal’s Jack Dylan, no one could tell me if this poster was for sale last night, just one more thing to look forward to tonight.
Aside from that awesome 7″ single series Van City’s Japandroids are re-releasing their two pre-Post-Nothing EPs (Lullaby Death Jams and All Lies) into one collection entitled No-Singles (May 11th on Polyvinyl). Here’s “Darkness on the Edge of Gastown”, a blast from 2008 when, as far as I could tell, Vancouver girls wore far too much neon and the future was bleak.
Woods have released a track from their upcoming release Echo Lake on Woodsist, due out May 11th [here]. Like most Woods songs their excellence is far cut short, especially in this case down to about 2 and half minutes. The raw melodies in this track are beauty and 45 seconds you’ll get hooked onto the best tambourine work you’ve ever heard. My anticipation for Echo Lake is though the roof. Listen:
As time goes on I find it harder and harder to take Conor Oberst seriously. I was a late Bright Eyes fan, jumping on that chuck wagon in 2004 because Digital Ash For A Digital Urn is a work of utter genius. But I could only get a few plays out of Cassadega and The Mystic Valley Band (read bland) bored me to tears. That Monsters of Folk album didn’t do much for me either. So Saddle Creek is now re-releasing One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, the EP featuring Oberst and Neva Dinova and putting the duo back together for some new material. Here’s one of the new tracks, I’m digging it, especially at 2:10, its shades of 2004 all over again.
Real Estate are back with a solid haze-pop gem in Suburban Dogs. This track has a lot of repeat play in it, my head is on a merry-go-round as I write this. They also have a very interesting video filmed at an actual real estate office (oh how Morrisette-ironic), click over to Weekly Tape Deck to see it.
You might recognize the name Ben Cook (aka Young Governor). Ben’s a member of Fucked Up, a former member No Warning and The Marvelous Darlings (among others) and handful of his own side-projects. Lately he’s put together Roommates, a power pop project with former Marvelous Darling Markus Fosco who is also… his roommate. Wi is the latest cassette release of a 4 part series that will be available on Scotch Tapes. If you’re reading this you’re likely shit out of luck getting your hands on Wi as it was released in January and limited to 99 copies. But not all is lost, you can have a listen to the tape below (sans tape deck).
It was a shit day, a long arduous shit day. So I’m about to step into the metro station, it has 4 doors of entry and I find the two that don’t open (like some kind of sick social-psychological experiment) . The final straw. My blood boils, I’m furious. I’m a walking talking mindlessNu-Metal song. I need to chill out, this will help (via gvb).
It’s Monday morning and I’ve got a treat for you. No Joy are a band of few songs currently but both that I’ve heard are killer. This Montreal/LA doomgaze duo will blow you away if you’re not careful, may I bring to your attention:
Girls released the Morning Light single on Fantasy Trashcan last month and if you flip that record over you’ll find the best cover of Skeeter Davis‘ End of the World you ever heard. Personally I miss the musical sadness of the originals lap steel but otherwise I have no complaints… just tears.
Like the rest of the world, I got most of my Civil War knowledge from Cold Mountain. But there will come a day, many years from now, when an offspring of mine will ask about the American Civil War and I’ll just play The Monitor on our antique digital computer.
I Will Beis the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Produced by Dee Dee and Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Gos and, more recently, The Raveonettes),I Will Beis neither lo-fi nor too polished. Just under thirty minutes with eleven songs, it’s a short tribute to love, fun and the classic pop form of the ’60s girl groups and early punk rockers.
If you preorder I Will Be from Subpop they are going to hook you up with a CD-R with a handful of DDG rarities, like this diddy:
March 13th should be marked on your calendar, Real Estate and Woods are playing Club Lambi. Make sure to get there early so you can experience the beautiful musical haunting of the venue by Valleys. If you love ghostly melodies and thickly layered sonic folk you are in for a treat.
