As time goes on I find it harder and harder to take Conor Oberst seriously. I was a late Bright Eyes fan, jumping on that chuck wagon in 2004 because Digital Ash For A Digital Urn is a work of utter genius. But I could only get a few plays out of Cassadega and The Mystic Valley Band (read bland) bored me to tears. That Monsters of Folk album didn’t do much for me either. So Saddle Creek is now re-releasing One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, the EP featuring Oberst and Neva Dinova and putting the duo back together for some new material. Here’s one of the new tracks, I’m digging it, especially at 2:10, its shades of 2004 all over again.

Real Estate are back with a solid haze-pop gem in Suburban Dogs. This track has a lot of repeat play in it, my head is on a merry-go-round as I write this. You might recognize the name Ben Cook (aka Young Governor). Ben’s a member of Fucked Up, a former member No Warning and The Marvelous Darlings (among others) and handful of his own side-projects. Lately he’s put together Roommates, a power pop project with former Marvelous Darling Markus Fosco who is also… his roommate. Wi is the latest cassette release of a 4 part series that will be available on Scotch Tapes. If you’re reading this you’re likely shit out of luck getting your hands on Wi as it was released in January and limited to 99 copies. But not all is lost, you can have a listen to the tape below (sans tape deck).

Girls released the Morning Light single on Fantasy Trashcan last month and if you flip that record over you’ll find the best cover of Skeeter Davis‘ End of the World you ever heard. Personally I miss the musical sadness of the originals lap steel but otherwise I have no complaints… just tears.

I Will Be is the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Produced by Dee Dee and Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Gos and, more recently, The Raveonettes), I Will Be is neither lo-fi nor too polished. Just under thirty minutes with eleven songs, it’s a short tribute to love, fun and the classic pop form of the ’60s girl groups and early punk rockers.
